Orange County Animal Services in conjunction with the SPCA is holding a candlelight vigil Saturday evening (Aug. 20) near its Orlando facility. Started in 1992 by The International Society for Animal Rights, the annual day of recognition is intended to draw attention to the staggering problem of homeless pets.
According to the Humane Society of the United States, an estimated 3 million to 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized by shelters each year because there is no one to adopt them. Organizers also hope to promote adoption and spay and neuter programs.
“This is the 19th year I have done this event, and we still have a long way to go,” said Susan Buser, a local representative for the international group.
Here are the details:
* Location: 2769 Conroy Road. Orlando, FL 32839 (between Orange County Animal Services and SPCA of Central Florida)
* Time: 7:45 p.m.
* FREE cold treats for two-legged and four-legged friends
* Bring your own candle
* Leashed pets welcome.
Please join other CARE Feline TNR volunteers, colony caregivers & animal advocates in support of homeless animals.

Dear Friends of CARE,
I would like to introduce you to Sawyer. You might remember him as being one of the Holiday Orphans. He found his furever home with a wonderful family last March. He showed up one Saturday evening limping. His caregiver rushed him to the emergency vet where he was diagnosed with a broken leg. A very generous supporter offered to help CARE pay for Sawyer to have surgery to save his leg. CARE receives many requests to assist sick and/or injured cats every day. Our mission is improve the lives of feral/community cats in Orange County via TNR and providing assistance to colony caregivers. Without the help of generous people like you, we would not be able to accomplish this mission. Perhaps you would like to donate to support our medical response efforts? If so, please send your tax-deductible donations to:

The new Barn Cats program has been in place just a short time and we already have happy farms participating in Central Florida. These are the “forgotten” cats in our society. Barn Cats is giving them a second chance to have a happy life and they give back as well.
The cats handle rodent and snake problems for the farms. This “Non-Toxic Pest Control” saves the farms money and prevents the horses, livestock, and dogs from being accidentally poisoned.
